FAQ
Private well water questions
How often should I test private well water?
EPA recommends annual testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH, plus additional testing after flooding, repairs, nearby contamination, or changes in taste, odor, or appearance.
Can I buy a filter before testing?
You can, but it is risky. A filter should match the contaminant, concentration, flow rate, and point of use. Testing gives you the basis for that decision.
Are private wells regulated like city water?
Generally, private wells are the owner’s responsibility and are not federally regulated like public water systems under the Safe Drinking Water Act.
Do NSF standards matter?
Yes. NSF/ANSI standards help verify specific product claims. The relevant standard depends on the contaminant and product type.
Is a home test kit enough?
Sometimes for screening. Use certified lab testing when the result affects health decisions, real estate, babies, pregnancy, or expensive treatment equipment.
